Chwalinska Between Two Worlds: Semifinal in Paris, Qualies at Wimbledon

Maja Chwalinska beat Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(3), 6-3 and qualified for the Roland Garros semifinal, on her very first appearance in the main draw of the Paris slam. And yet, on paper, the same player who sits one win away from a Major final remains one of those who will have to come through qualifying at Wimbledon: her name appears among the entries for the London pre-qualifying.

The paradox comes down to the ranking calendar. The entry list for the 2026 Wimbledon qualifying closed on June 1, using the rankings from the week of May 25, when the Pole was still world No. 114. Her run in Paris, on the other hand, will only count towards the rankings the week after the tournament. The system has a built-in lag, and for a few days Chwalinska's reality is running faster than the number next to her name.

At twenty-four, the Polish left-hander has strung together eight consecutive wins across qualifying and the main draw, dropping just one set. Along the way she has also knocked out top-50 players like Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari, before her clear-cut win over Kalinskaya, the No. 22 seed. She is the second qualifier of the Open era to reach the women's semifinal at Roland Garros, after Nadia Podoroska in 2020, and the fourth Polish player ever to reach a Major semifinal.

That 114 is bound to vanish quickly anyway. The semifinal, scheduled for tomorrow against Diana Shnaider who stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, already guarantees her a place in the top 50, with the top 30 as the worst-case scenario and the prospect of climbing even higher if she goes one step further. For now, the image remains of a player who in London is entered to fight for a spot in the draw, and in Paris has already secured one among the last four. She had also reached Wimbledon as a qualifier in 2022, going all the way to the second round on her grand slam debut.
