Cobolli Reaches Quarters: First Slam Quarterfinal On Clay In Paris

Flavio Cobolli defeated American Zachary Svajda 6-2, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(5) in three hours and nineteen minutes on Philippe-Chatrier, reaching his first career quarterfinal at Roland Garros. For the No. 10 seed, it is his second appearance in the last eight at a Slam, following Wimbledon 2025.

The first two sets were a formality: a double break in each, a home-favorite rhythm, just twelve games conceded to an opponent who only a few weeks ago had a single win on the main tour on clay. Then Svajda, ATP No. 85 and in his first Slam second week, started to extend the rallies and push Cobolli out of his rhythm, winning the third-set tie-break 7-3.

The fourth set is the interesting part. Cobolli went up 5-1 and had the match in hand, then failed to close it out on serve once, and again a second time. A counter-attacking forehand and a drop shot to break Svajda's momentum pulled him through, before the tie-break won 7-5. Forty-one forehand winners out of fifty-seven total tell the story of the weapon that kept him in the match when his head started to shake.

"The only thing I understood today is that the match is never over," he said after the match. "I'm happy, but I'm still nervous." In the quarterfinals he will face the winner between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alejandro Tabilo.
