Eala Makes History: WTA No. 20, First-Ever Filipina

Alex Eala has entered the WTA Top 20 for the first time. The 21-year-old from Manila climbed eight spots, from No. 28 to No. 20, after winning the Mubadala DC Open in Washington — the first Filipina in history to reach the world's top twenty.

The title, her first on the WTA tour, came in the final against Jessica Pegula, the world No. 3 and top seed, whom she beat 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. The match had started on Sunday and was suspended by rain, resuming and finishing the following day. No player from the Philippines had ever won a tour-level title before her.

The run says a lot about how much this trophy is worth. In Washington, Eala eliminated all three top seeds in the draw as well as defending champion Leylah Fernandez, beating Naomi Osaka in the semifinal before the final showdown with Pegula.

"At the start of the week, I never thought I'd be lifting this trophy. Winning a 500 is crazy, it's an incredible milestone for me."

What stands out most is how the turnaround happened. Down a set and with momentum against her, Eala won the match's last eight games in a row, leaving the American with nothing to hold on to in the third set. The ranking jump is the arithmetic result of a week in which a player outside the top twenty beat, one after another, the players who were supposed to dominate that draw.
