Faria Stuns Shelton for First Career Top-10 Win

Jaime Faria beat Ben Shelton 6-4, 6-4 in the second round in Cincinnati on Sunday, August 16, the American's first match since winning the title in Montreal. For the Portuguese player, ranked No. 79 and through from qualifying, it's his first career win over a top-10 opponent.

Shelton, ranked No. 6, had won six straight matches and back-to-back titles in Canada without dropping a set. In Cincinnati he created twelve break points and converted just one. He led 4-1 in the second set and looked headed for a third, then Faria won five games in a row to close it out.

Faria, 23, from Lisbon, is Portugal's second-ranked player and has yet to win an ATP title. Two days earlier he'd picked up his first-ever main-draw win at a Masters 1000, beating Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 6-2. His record against top-10 players now stands at 1-2.

In the third round he faces Australian Adam Walton, who beat Ignacio Buse in straight sets.
