Fonseca Withdraws: No US Open Due To Abdominal Injury

Joao Fonseca will not play the 2026 US Open. The Brazilian, number 26 in the ATP rankings, announced his withdrawal on Instagram on Monday, August 24:

"After the tests and the start of treatment for my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to fully recover and be able to compete at a high level."

In the same message he calls it a difficult decision, since New York remains a special tournament for him.

The problem surfaced in Cincinnati, where Fonseca withdrew from his match against Christopher O'Connell after feeling a sharp pain on the left side of his abdomen in training. From there he returned to Rio de Janeiro for treatment. The statement does not include a precise diagnosis or a recovery timeline.

The withdrawal breaks a run of seven consecutive Slams played since the 2025 Australian Open, the entire span in which Fonseca built his ranking: two ATP titles in 2025, the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires and the Swiss Indoors in Basel, and this year's Roland Garros quarterfinal, his best result at a Major.

He is the third player in the top thirty to skip Flushing Meadows, after Jannik Sinner, who withdrew on August 21 with a right knee injury, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, out with a back problem.

Fonseca turned twenty on August 21, three days before the announcement, and in the message he also thanks fans for their good wishes. The break comes at the worst possible point in his calendar: in October he defends the 500 points from last year's title in Basel, and the time to get back to competitive form is running short.
