Herbert Erupts In Paris: "Look Me In The Eye", Sonego Wins In Five Sets

Lorenzo Sonego defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6, 5-7, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in four hours and nine minutes in the first round of Roland Garros 2026, on Court Simonne-Mathieu, in a match that ended after midnight and was marked by the Frenchman's outburst against the chair umpire at the start of the fifth set.

Serving at 0-1 in the fifth and facing break point for the Italian, Herbert contested a call on a ball he believed was out. After the umpire came down to check the mark and confirmed the point for Sonego, the Frenchman lost his composure: "Regarde-moi dans les yeux, tu vas voir qu'elle est dehors. Si tu ne t'excuses pas après ça, je ne te parlerai plus jamais". That break, in effect, decided the deciding set.

The scene reignited the debate over the FFT's choice to remain the only Slam not to adopt Electronic Line Calling in 2026, while the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open all use it. President Gilles Moretton defended the federation's stance, championing a system based on line judges: "We are the federation where umpires and line judges work every day and, I say this with all humility, we are the best country in the world at supplying match officials to the tour".
