Kostyuk Makes History: First Ukrainian Woman In Roland Garros Semifinal

Marta Kostyuk beat compatriot Elina Svitolina 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in one hour and forty-nine minutes, becoming the first Ukrainian woman to reach the Roland Garros semifinal in the Open era. It was the first all-Ukrainian quarterfinal in Roland Garros history.

Seeded 15th, Kostyuk got the better of the number 7 seed with the forehand and depth that have kept her unbeaten on clay this season: today's win is her seventeenth in a row on the dirt, and it ended Svitolina's run at ten.

In the semifinal she will face Mirra Andreeva, in a rematch of the Madrid final. The head-to-head reads 2-0 in favor of the Ukrainian.

After the match Kostyuk dedicated the win to her country, recalling yet another difficult night in Kyiv: "We had another very tough night in Ukraine, especially in Kyiv. So many people dead. I want to dedicate this match to the Ukrainian people." A semifinal built match after match, in a tournament where Kostyuk has already eliminated Iga Swiatek too, and which sees her reach the final four without ever dropping a set too many in the moments that mattered.
