McEnroe Slams Zverev: "No Pressure? Ridiculous"

John McEnroe publicly dismantled the words Alexander Zverev used to play down the tension on the eve of the Roland Garros final: "BS, ridiculous, it's incredible pressure." For the former world number one, in fact, the German is living the most loaded moment of his career: "There's more pressure on him than in any other tournament he's ever played, for sure."

McEnroe then twisted the knife in the wound Zverev has been carrying for years: "He's the best player in the history of men's tennis to have never won a Major." It's a label that weighs heavily, because it captures exactly where the German stands, stuck on three Slam finals lost without appeal: the 2020 US Open against Thiem, the 2024 Roland Garros against Alcaraz after leading two sets to one, and the 2025 Australian Open against Sinner.

The fifth chance comes under the most favorable conditions possible. With Alcaraz withdrawn through injury and Sinner knocked out early from the draw, Zverev reached the final without crossing paths with a single top 25 player, beating Jakub Mensik 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinal. Across the net on Sunday he will have Flavio Cobolli, world number 14 and in his first Major final.

It's precisely for this reason that McEnroe leaves no margin: "If he doesn't win now, I don't know if he ever will." It's the kind of line a player would rather not hear on the eve of a final, and one that tells better than any statistic what this Sunday in Paris means for Zverev.
