Montreal loses De Minaur and Musetti: Darderi holds on in the bottom half

Cameron Norrie eliminated Alex de Minaur, the third seed, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-1 in two hours and 52 minutes. The Australian had a match point at 5-2 in the second set and squandered it with a double fault, then hit another one serving for the match at 5-4. He won just one game in the third set.

A few hours later, Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 11 seed, also went out, beaten 6-4, 6-3 by Rafael Jodar. The 19-year-old Spaniard had already beaten Musetti six days earlier in the Washington quarterfinals. The decisive break in the first set came at 4-4, with Jodar reeling off eleven straight points. The Italian finished with 34 unforced errors to his opponent's 22.

Luciano Darderi is the only Italian left in the bottom half: 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 over Juncheng Shang, the Chinese player who saved five match points against Andrey Rublev on Tuesday and fended off two more at 3-5 in the third set. In the round of 16, Darderi faces Nuno Borges, who dispatched Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 6-2.

In the other bottom-half matches, Arthur Fils beat Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-2 without facing a break point, Jiri Lehecka got past Alexander Blockx 6-3, 6-4, Brandon Nakashima outlasted Titouan Droguet 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Arthur Rinderknech advanced when Frances Tiafoe retired.

Today it's the top half's turn, and it's already lost almost all its big names: Zverev out to Griekspoor, Medvedev to van de Zandschulp, Fritz to Tirante, and Auger-Aliassime withdrew before his opener with a back injury. Defending champion Ben Shelton plays Zizou Bergs, Casper Ruud faces Joao Fonseca, Matteo Arnaldi takes on Griekspoor.
