Nakashima Stops Darderi: First Masters 1000 Semifinal

Brandon Nakashima beat Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and seventeen minutes in the Montreal quarterfinals, claiming the first Masters 1000 semifinal of his career. The American, ranked number 31 in the world and the 28th seed, never lost his serve: eleven aces to the Italian's two, and three break points converted out of three.

Darderi, the 19th seed, was never able to dictate the rallies on his terms. Eight break points created, none converted, six double faults. Winning just 28% of points on his second serve tells the story of where the match was decided.

That ends the most significant Italian run of the season on North American hard courts. Montreal was Darderi's tenth ATP quarterfinal of 2026, the outright lead on tour this year ahead of Zverev, stuck on nine. Seven of those quarterfinals came on clay, two on hard courts and one on the grass of Mallorca. It was also his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal after Rome, his first on hard courts, and his win over Borges in the round of 16 had taken him to thirty wins on the season, a personal best.

For Nakashima it's the fifth semifinal of 2026, after Brisbane, Acapulco, Queen's and Washington, but the first at this level. At twenty-five, he was the oldest of the quarterfinalists left in the Montreal draw. In the semifinal he'll face the winner between Rafael Jodar and Arthur Fils.
