It's not just the calendar: why tennis players' arms give out

Every time a player breaks down, tennis hands down the same verdict: too many matches, too many tournaments, a calendar that lets no one breathe. It's a convenient explanation, and convenient because it's half true. The problem is the missing half, the one almost no one wants to look at: the racquet the player grips in his hand.

The man who said so, on 2 July 2026 at an IBM event at Wimbledon, was Andy Murray. Not an engineer and not just any pundit: someone who played for twenty years at the highest level with an arm that had been operated on more than once. His reasoning deserves to be taken seriously, because it shifts the debate away from where it has sat comfortably for years.

The thesis no one wants to hear

Murray starts from a fact that overturns conventional wisdom. "I don't think the numbers say there are more injuries today than there were ten years ago," he explained. The overall volume, in short, has not exploded the way perception would have it.

What has changed is their nature. "It does seem, though, that there are more upper-limb injuries than before, and in my view that comes down to the change in racquet technology and in the strings players use." Not the knees, not the back. Arms, shoulders, elbows, wrists. The part of the body that touches the ball.

It's a surgical narrowing of the problem. If the total number is stable but one precise category is growing, then the cause cannot be workload alone, which would strike the whole body indiscriminately. Something must be concentrating the stress exactly there, on the limb that grips the tool.

Where the force goes

Here the argument becomes elementary physics, and physics does not allow for narratives. Every impact between ball and string generates an amount of energy that has to go somewhere. Either the racquet absorbs it, or the arm does.

For decades the racquet absorbed the greater part of it. Heavy frames, soft strings, natural gut that damped the vibrations like a shock absorber. "Players used to use much more forgiving strings and heavier racquets, and that meant most of the force went through the racquet rather than through the arm," Murray recalled.

Then came polyester. From the late nineties, poly and co-poly strings conquered the tour, and they changed the proportions of that balance. Their dynamic stiffness reaches values close to 300 pounds per inch, against roughly 170 for a synthetic and around 100 for natural gut. Translated: a polyester string returns extraordinary control and spin, but absorbs almost nothing. The shock once lost in the frame now travels up the handle and reaches the wrist.

On the other side, the frames. The shift from wood to graphite made racquets far lighter, and players wanted them lighter and lighter still. The reason is once again explained by Murray, and it's reasonable: "The game has got quicker, players feel they need a lighter racquet." When the ball arrives at that speed, you want to move it sooner, and a light racquet moves sooner. But a light racquet also opposes less mass to the impact, and whatever it doesn't stop, the arm does.

Add the two together. Strings that no longer absorb anything, frames that weigh less and return more to the wrist. The result is a tool optimized to win the rally and terrible at protecting the person who uses it.

The Draper case

Jack Draper is the almost too-perfect illustration of this argument. He ended his 2025 season early after the US Open because of a bone stress injury to his left arm, the arm of his forehand and his serve. He missed the 2026 Australian Open for the same reason, returned only in February, and at Wimbledon had to stop again for a recurrence of the same trouble.

A bone stress injury is not an accident. It is the body surrendering to a microtrauma repeated thousands of times, shot after shot, until the bone can no longer hold. It is exactly the kind of damage you would expect from an arm asked to absorb, on every single impact, a fraction more force than it absorbed a generation ago. And Draper does not start from zero: back in 2023 he had already lost six months to his shoulder, with more than one operation. An upper limb that gives out, then gives out again, then gives out once more.

The inconvenient culprit

It must be said honestly: the calendar exists, and the problem is real. Wimbledon 2026 counted at least eighteen withdrawals, and Draper himself publicly called for something to change. No one here is claiming that playing eleven months a year is good for you.

But the calendar explains the fatigue, not its location. An overloaded body can collapse anywhere, whereas here it collapses with statistical precision always at the same point. The compression of the schedule is a general cause; the tool is the specific cause, the one that decides where the taut string of the workload will snap.

The reason tennis prefers to talk about the calendar is that the calendar is an external culprit. The racquet is not. The racquet implicates players' choices, technical sponsors, an entire industry built on the message that more stiffness and more lightness equal more performance. To admit that the tool protects less is to admit that progress came at a price, and that the price is paid by the arms of those who win the rallies.

Murray did not propose a revolution. He merely suggested that, perhaps, some players ought to review their setup. It is a modest piece of advice. But behind it lies a question tennis has been putting off for twenty years: are we sure we built racquets to play better, or only to hit harder until the arm gives out?
