Rome Under the Rain: Darderi vs Ruud Suspended, Everything Pushed Back to at Least 5 PM

The semifinal between Luciano Darderi and Casper Ruud at the Italian Open was suspended due to rain shortly after 4 PM, on the Center Court at the Foro Italico. At the moment of the stoppage, the Norwegian was leading 4-1 in the first set, with Darderi serving down break point. The umpires' official announcement to the crowd was clear: no play until at least 5 PM.

The weather front was expected. The City of Rome's bulletin issued a yellow alert valid for the next 24-36 hours, and by mid-afternoon the sky above the Foro had already closed in. Sky and ilMeteo agree on the picture: intensifying showers between 4 and 5 PM, a critical window for the rest of the afternoon, and in the evening possible thunderstorms with wind and electrical activity. The day's high temperature peaked around 21 degrees.

Also at risk is the second semifinal, the one between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev, scheduled not before 7 PM. With the Darderi-Ruud match still to be completed and a forecast that worsens after sunset, the day's program is up in the air. The organization has not yet announced a formal postponement, but the protocol is clear: play resumes only when the surface is perfect, and with rain falling intermittently, the wait risks dragging on.

For Darderi, ATP world No. 20, the suspension is almost a small gift: a few extra minutes to breathe before the break point that could see Ruud, currently No. 25, serve for 5-1. For the crowd at the Foro, on the other hand, it is the usual Roman May liturgy, made of tarpaulins sliding slowly over the red clay and eyes turned to the sky. The final is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, and to get there two full semifinals are still needed.
