Safiullin Shocks Wimbledon: Rublev Out in the First Round

Roman Safiullin knocked out the No. 12 seed Andrey Rublev in the first round of Wimbledon, prevailing 6-4, 6-7(6), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 after just under four hours of play. The Russian, who came through qualifying into the main draw, closed out a marathon match by winning the deciding tie-break 14-12, on Court 16.

World No. 132 against the 12th seed: on paper it was no contest, and for two sets it looked like the form book might hold, with Rublev fighting back to take the second and third sets and move ahead two sets to one. Then the momentum flipped. It was the pair's first ever meeting, and the player you'd least expect came out on top.

Rublev was undone by his usual demons in the tight moments: eight double faults, plenty of unforced errors on the points that mattered, and a serve that cracked just when he needed to hold it. Safiullin, by contrast, hung on in the longer rallies and found his clarity in the endless tie-break that decided the match.

What stands out is the composure of a qualifier who handled two and a half hours of an emotional roller coaster without ever really wobbling. At Wimbledon, where grass rewards whoever keeps their nerves steady on the few points that swing an entire set, Safiullin did exactly that: he waited, he held firm, and when Rublev's arm trembled, he did not miss.
