WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY:
🇬🇷 Tsitsipas beats Darderi where it all began
Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Luciano Darderi, the No. 18 seed, 6-3, 6-4. Shanghai is where he won his first tour-level match, in 2017 against Karen Khachanov.
Darderi started badly and never found a way back in. The Greek has climbed back to No. 43 in the world after a difficult stretch, and a match this tidy, against a seed, also helps him gauge how much of that tennis he still has. In the third round he faces Taylor Fritz.
🇮🇹 Fritz knocks out Arnaldi, no Italians in round three
Taylor Fritz, the No. 11 seed, beat Matteo Arnaldi 7-5, 6-4. With Darderi also out, Shanghai has no Italians left in the singles before the third round has even started.
According to Sky Sport, Arnaldi was bothered by a shoulder problem that took the looseness out of his forehand. In a Masters without Sinner, Italian singles ends here.
🇪🇸 Alcaraz dispatches Cerundolo 6-3, 6-3
Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed, beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-3. He came to Shanghai after winning the title in Tokyo, his first since returning from injury, and the switch from one tournament to the next took nothing away from him. In the third round he meets Zizou Bergs.
🎾 Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime win in three sets, Vacherot keeps winning
Daniil Medvedev, the No. 5 seed, beat Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets with 21 aces, after his disqualification in the Beijing semifinal against Djokovic, when a ball he hit struck a spectator. Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No. 4 seed, came from behind to beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli in three sets and nearly three hours, with Ivan Ljubicic newly arrived on his coaching team. Valentin Vacherot, the defending champion, beat Sebastian Baez.
Medvedev leaned on his serve; after days of talk about the disqualification, what probably mattered most to him was getting back on court and walking off with a win. In the third round Vacherot faces Tommy Paul.
WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY:
- Shelton vs Gea - At 06:00 Italian time, opening the Stadium. Ben Shelton, the No. 3 seed, takes on the Frenchman who knocked out Ugo Humbert.
- Khachanov vs Mannarino - At 06:00 Italian time on Grandstand 2. Mannarino will try to drag Khachanov into his low, slow rallies.
- Hurkacz vs Zhou - Second match on the Stadium. Two of the matches that defined this week meet here: Hurkacz beat Djokovic, and Zhou knocked out Musetti with the whole crowd behind him.
- De Minaur vs Sakamoto - After Khachanov-Mannarino on Grandstand 2. The Japanese qualifier, who beat Rublev, takes on the No. 9 seed.
- Bolelli/Vavassori vs Krajicek/Mektic - On Court 3, in the session that starts at 06:00 Italian time.
