WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY:

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Gea knocks out Shelton in his first Masters 1000

Arthur Gea beat Ben Shelton, the No. 3 seed, 7-6, 7-6 in two hours and seven minutes. The Frenchman is 21 and is playing his first main draw at a Masters 1000.

Shelton did not look for long excuses: "I got outplayed. My opponent played better than me," he said, adding that he had arrived late in China and had felt the jet lag. Gea won his first title in Los Cabos this summer, so calling it an upset tells only part of the story of the evening.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Zverev wastes two match points but beats Halys

Alexander Zverev, the No. 1 seed, beat Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 in about two and a quarter hours. In the second-set tiebreak he had two match points and let them go, then broke the Frenchman in the third. It is his 60th win of 2026 and his fourth in four meetings with Halys this year.

Alexander Bublik also went through, coming from behind to beat Brandon Nakashima 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5). After the first set the Kazakh broke a racket and the plexiglass of the courtside fridge, then, according to Ubitennis, finished with 22 aces and no break points conceded.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± Hurkacz also beats Zhou, nine straight wins in Shanghai

Hubert Hurkacz beat Chinese wild card Zhou Yi 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The Pole, champion here in 2023, has now won nine straight matches in Shanghai.

Zhou, who knocked out Musetti on Friday, took the second set with the crowd on his side, and Hurkacz had to start all over again in the third. After the match his coach Gilles Cervara pointed him to the practice courts while miming a forehand, as if to say the work isn't done, and Hurkacz threw up his arms in mock despair. Since Cervara joined his team, the Pole seems to have found his serve again, along with a bit of lightness.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Davidovich Fokina saves a match point against Tiafoe

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6). In the deciding tiebreak the Spaniard saved a match point.

This season Davidovich Fokina has already won in Mallorca and Chengdu. Jakub Mensik also went through, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 over Francisco Cerundolo.
