WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY:

πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί Medvedev beats Tsitsipas without facing a break point

Daniil Medvedev beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 24 minutes. He didn't face a single break point and finished with 10 unforced errors to his opponent's 18. He now leads the head-to-head 11-5.

It was the most anticipated round-of-16 match of the day and the tidiest. On Friday in the quarterfinals he faces Tommy Paul.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Paul ends Bergs' run and sets up a meeting with Medvedev

Tommy Paul beat Zizou Bergs 7-6(5), 6-4.

Bergs' week, in which he had beaten Carlos Alcaraz, comes to an end, and yesterday's match shows how hard it is to put together the same level two days later. Paul is back in the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000. Against a Medvedev serving like this, he will need something more on return on Friday.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Jodar comes back again and stays in the race for Turin

Rafael Jodar beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 in two and a half hours. It's the third match in a row in Shanghai in which the Spaniard has lost the first set and still won.

Jodar admitted that van de Zandschulp played the big points better in the tiebreak. Then an early break in the second set changed the match. It's the fourth time this year he has reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000, after Madrid, Rome and Montreal, and every round won here counts in the race for the ATP Finals, where he is chasing de Minaur for the last available spot. On Friday he will face Casper Ruud.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄ Ruud into the quarterfinals as Auger-Aliassime retires with a knee injury

Casper Ruud was up 5-2 in the first set when Felix Auger-Aliassime retired with a left knee problem. The Canadian got hurt in the opening games, and his team heard him say: "No, it hurts too much".

For Ruud it's the first Shanghai quarterfinal of his career, reached in the way no player wants. For Auger-Aliassime the problem goes beyond this tournament: his chase for Turin now depends mostly on how that knee responds in the coming days.

WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY:

  • Gea vs Davidovich Fokina - At 8:30 Italian time. Arthur Gea is playing his first Masters 1000 main draw and has already beaten Ben Shelton and Jakub Mensik; Alejandro Davidovich Fokina comes in off a three-set win over Hubert Hurkacz.
  • Zverev vs de Minaur - Alexander Zverev has had right ankle problems during the tournament, and Alex de Minaur arrived in Shanghai after retiring with an adductor injury in the Beijing final. If the match goes long, which of the two bodies holds up better will also matter.
