Sonego Beats Diallo in Five: Fritz Awaits at Wimbledon

Lorenzo Sonego defeated Gabriel Diallo 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 6-2 in the second round at Wimbledon, in a four-hour-and-22-minute marathon on Court 14. The Italian, world No. 69, advances to the third round, where he will face American Taylor Fritz, world No. 7 and 6th seed.

For Sonego, 31, it's his second win in as many meetings against the Canadian, born in 2001 and currently world No. 88: the two had already met in 2025 in Auckland, a match won by the Italian in the third set after two tiebreaks. The Wimbledon clash, however, was their first on grass, and it showed: three of the five sets were decided by tiebreak, with Diallo taking the fourth 8-6 before folding in the fifth.

Sonego's reaction right after losing that fourth-set tiebreak 8-6 stands out: in the fifth, with the Canadian visibly weighed down by the match's length, the Italian closed it out 6-2 without conceding anything else, confirming his resilience in longer, more nerve-wracking contests.
