WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY:

🇮🇹 Sinner Goes to Five With a Scare

Jannik Sinner opened the defence of his title with a victory over Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3 in three hours and thirty minutes — but the result is almost secondary to what happened in between. In the third set, at 1-1, the world number one lost his grip on the grass and came crashing down hard, legs splayed, a cry, a few seconds on the ground. Then he got up, and carried on playing as his shoe gradually turned more red. Only afterwards, with the match over, did he explain it was a nail problem: "It looks worse than it is." The match had fifty-two unforced errors and a set lost in a tie-break, yet in the fourth and fifth Sinner found something more stable, a methodical progression that seemed almost indifferent to the physical context of everything that had come before. Matches like this, with these variables, usually tell you more about mental resilience than a dominated set in normal conditions.

🇮🇹 Darderi Eliminated by Quinn in the First Round

Luciano Darderi, 14th seed, was knocked out in the first round by American Ethan Quinn 7-6(7), 7-5, 6-2. Quinn had arrived at Wimbledon fresh from a final on the grass at Mallorca, with five wins from six matches on grass this season; Darderi on grass has a record of five wins from thirteen ATP matches, and the difference became progressively clearer set by set. The third, ending 6-2, explains better than any analysis a gap that is not only technical but one of confidence with the surface. On grass many of the qualities that make Darderi dangerous on hard courts and clay — baseline solidity, consistency — have less room to express themselves, and Quinn was quick to exploit this from the start. Elisabetta Cocciaretto also went out in the first round, beaten by Wang Xinyu 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in almost two hours.

🎾 Rublev Out: Two Match Points Wasted in the Fifth Set

Andrey Rublev, 12th seed, was eliminated by Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-7(6), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12) in almost four hours. In the fifth-set tie-break, Rublev had two match points and converted neither. This Slam season, Rublev continues to collect early exits — and yesterday's has the typical shape of his difficulties: the solidity is there, but the moment the result gets close, something stops working properly. At this point it's a pattern that can no longer be put down to coincidence.

WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY:

Play begins at 12:00 Italian time (11:00 BST), with a full day of Italians on court.

• 🇮🇹 Jasmine Paolini (13) vs Robin Montgomery — Court 12, first match at 12:00. Paolini makes her Wimbledon debut as 13th seed against a young American who is not favoured on paper. The surface has historically been difficult ground for her.
• 🇮🇹 Matteo Berrettini vs Stan Wawrinka — Court 1, last match. Berrettini on grass is a different player compared to the rest of the season, and Wimbledon is the tournament where he has shown he can go deep. Wawrinka is 41 years old, has a wildcard and probably his last chance at a Slam. A match worth watching for that alone.
• 🇮🇹 Flavio Cobolli (9) vs Mariano Navone — Court 2, last match. Cobolli makes his Wimbledon debut as 9th seed — a significant step up in status to absorb.
• 🇮🇹 Lorenzo Sonego vs Tomas Etcheverry (29) — Court 4, third match. Sonego on grass has qualities that can surprise those who don't know him well.
• 🇮🇹 Matteo Arnaldi (32) vs Quentin Halys — Court 4, second match.
• Iga Swiatek (3) vs Taylor Townsend — Centre Court, first match. The defending champion faces one of the most unpredictable players on grass. Swiatek herself has admitted she doesn't understand why Wimbledon is so hard for her to defend. Townsend is exactly the kind of opponent who won't help her figure it out.
• Alexander Zverev (2) vs Alexander Blockx — Centre Court, second match. The Roland Garros champion makes his debut on a surface where he has never won a Slam.
• Serena Williams vs Maya Joint — Centre Court, last match of the day. Williams's first singles match in almost four years. She accepted the wildcard almost at the last moment: "I never thought I'd be back." One of those comebacks you watch regardless, whatever is left of her tennis.
