ATP Ranking: Alcaraz Returns to Number 2 Without Playing

Carlos Alcaraz is back to world number 2 despite not having played an official match since April. The ATP rankings published on August 3, 2026 put him at 8,160 points, forty more than Alexander Zverev, who has slipped to third. Ahead of both remains Jannik Sinner, on 13,450 points, who with this week reaches 81 total weeks at number one.

The overtake isn't born of a result but of a scheduling quirk. The Canadian Open 2025 main draw had started on July 27, this year's on August 2: last year's points therefore dropped out of the count a week early, penalizing anyone who had gone deep in Toronto. Zverev, a semifinalist twelve months ago, paid the price. Alcaraz, sidelined since the right wrist injury suffered in the first round in Barcelona and absent from Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, had nothing to lose.

The same mechanism pushed Flavio Cobolli to eighth place with 3,330 points. Clearing his path was Ben Shelton, champion in Toronto in 2025, whose points dropped out of the count with the same head start: he slipped to tenth place. Rounding out the top ten are Auger-Aliassime fourth, Djokovic fifth, Medvedev sixth, de Minaur seventh and Taylor Fritz ninth.

The tail end of the top ten, though, isn't settled yet. The final of the Washington ATP 500 between Fritz and Rafael Jodar, postponed by Sunday's storms, is being played on Monday: until that result, the positions around eighth place remain in flux.

What remains is a snapshot of a ranking that, for one week, tells the story of the calendar more than the court. Alcaraz is entered in Cincinnati, where he defends his title and where his return is expected. Until then, his number 2 is a number on paper.
