Chwalinska Toward Wimbledon: Top 25 but Off the List

Maja Chwalinska reaches the Roland Garros final ranked No. 114 in the world, but risks not making it into the Wimbledon main draw. The Pole, the first qualifier ever to reach the final in Paris in the Open era, will climb to around 21st in the live rankings, and yet the entry list for the Championships closed when her name was still too far down.

The paradox arises from the calendar. The entry list for the Wimbledon women's draw was drawn up on the mid-May rankings, with the last direct entrant sitting in 101st place: on that date Chwalinska, stuck in 114th, was on the outside. Her six wins in the Paris main draw, earned after three rounds of qualifying, are worth a jump of more than ninety places and a new top-25 ranking. But the ranking that counts for entry to Wimbledon is the one already frozen.

Two paths remain. The first is a wild card from the organizers, who every year hand out invitations to players with a marquee profile. The second is the qualifying tournament, where a player effectively in the top 25 would find herself fighting for a spot against opponents ranked far lower.

It is a snapshot of a limitation in the system. A historic run, capable of rewriting a player's value in the space of two weeks, collides with rules designed to capture the reality of a month earlier. Chwalinska, twenty-four, will play her first Slam final on Saturday against Mirra Andreeva. Whatever the result, her next problem will already be a different one: convincing Wimbledon to let her in through the front door.
