Cobolli-Fils In Cincinnati: First Masters 1000 Final At Stake

Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fils meet in the semifinals in Cincinnati on Saturday, August 22, with a first-ever Masters 1000 final at stake for both. For the Italian, seeded 7th, it's also his first semifinal at this level; for the Frenchman, seeded 21st, it's his third of 2026 after Miami and Madrid.

Cobolli got there by beating Tommy Paul 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The first set went by without him finding any answers: 46.2% of points won on first serve, against 78.1% across the next two sets, landing twelve first serves out of twelve in the third. He broke Paul's serve at 2-1 in the second set, and at 5-2, with the set all but decided, he asked for a tub of M&M's to get some sugar back in his system:

"I was a bit tired, I needed energy, sugar, and I love M&M's."

In the third set he broke at 5-4, with the American serving to stay in the match. It was his second match in under twenty-four hours, after the two hours and thirty-one minutes against Rafael Jodar. He's now 2-0 against Paul, both wins here in Cincinnati.

Fils made short work of his match in 64 minutes: 6-3, 6-2 over Thiago Agustín Tirante, the Argentine who had eliminated Novak Djokovic in the second round. The Frenchman didn't face a single break point, broke serve at the start of the second set, and closed it out by reeling off five games in a row. In the round of 16 he had already beaten Alex de Minaur.

The head-to-head favors Fils 2-0, the last meeting in Monte-Carlo in April 2025, 6-2, 6-4 on clay. The first dates back to the 2023 Next Gen Finals, when both were young players still looking to prove themselves.

The ranking math is already in motion. Cobolli is guaranteed a new career-high ranking, at least No. 6, and becomes the second Italian to reach the Cincinnati semifinals after Jannik Sinner. Fils is back in the top 20, projected at No. 18, four spots off his career high, and with the win over Tirante he became the first Frenchman since Guy Forget in 1991 to play three Masters 1000 semifinals in one season. Both are chasing their first qualification for the Finals.
