Czech Republic Champions: Twelfth Billie Jean King Cup

The Czech Republic has just beaten Ukraine 2-0 in the Shenzhen final, winning its twelfth Billie Jean King Cup, its first since 2018. Karolina Muchova opened the day by beating Anhelina Kalinina 6-2, 6-3, then Linda Noskova closed it out against Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6(5). Only the United States, with 18 titles, have won more.

Muchova, ranked No. 8 in the world, wrapped up her match in seventy minutes. She served 72% first balls in, won 24 of 28 points on her first serve and fired eight aces, never giving Kalinina a real foothold on return.

Noskova had to work longer. One hour and thirty-three minutes against Svitolina, ranked No. 7, with a second set that went to a tiebreak: the Ukrainian saved two match points before the Czech closed it out in the third. It's Noskova's eighth straight win in Billie Jean King Cup play, five of them in 2026.

The two who brought the title home had met in July in the Wimbledon final, when Noskova beat Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 for her first Slam. On the other side of the net was a Ukraine team at its first final ever, arriving in Shenzhen without Marta Kostyuk, ranked No. 10, sidelined by a right wrist injury, and capable of knocking out two-time defending champion Italy in the semifinal.

On the Czech bench was Barbora Strycova, who with this title becomes the fourth woman to win the competition both as a player and as a captain, after Margaret Court, Chris Evert and Billie Jean King. In her first season as captain, she inherited a team whose two best players had just faced each other in a Major final, and fielded them both without needing the deciding doubles.
