Gauff Survives At Wimbledon: Six Straight Points In The Third-Set Tie-Break

Coco Gauff beat Solana Sierra 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) in the second round of Wimbledon, rallying from 5-3 down and saving a match point on her opponent's serve in the third set. Trailing 7-4 in the deciding tie-break, the American won six consecutive points to close it out 10-7 after two hours and eight minutes.

The world number 56, an Argentine, had raised her level in the second set and served for the match at 5-4 in the third, before being broken back. For Gauff it is the first time in her career that she has won a deciding-set tie-break at a Slam, a stat that shows just how compromised the match was.

What stands out is her composure in the points that matter: after losing the thread in the second set and coming within two points of elimination, Gauff rediscovered depth and courage exactly when the momentum was entirely with Sierra. In the third round she faces compatriot Claire Liu.
