Montreal Underwater: All Men's Quarterfinals In One Day

Rain and storm warnings wiped out Monday's entire singles schedule at the Montreal Masters 1000. Not a single singles match was played at the National Bank Open, and all four men's quarterfinals now go ahead on Tuesday, August 11.

Play resumes at 12:30 local time with Luciano Darderi vs Brandon Nakashima and Rafael Jódar vs Arthur Fils. In the evening session, from 6 p.m., Jakub Menšík faces Ben Shelton and Learner Tien takes on Daniel Mérida. Semifinals are Wednesday, the final Thursday, August 13, a day the forecast again calls for rain.

It's not the first time in two weeks: bad weather has disrupted the draw for days. Montreal has no roofed center court, like most Masters 1000 events: only Madrid, Shanghai and Paris can close the roof and keep playing.

The delay compresses the finishing stretch into three straight days for anyone who reaches the end. Shelton, the fifth seed and defending champion, is the highest seed left in the draw after the back injury withdrawal of Félix Auger-Aliassime, the No. 2 seed. Darderi is into his second career Masters 1000 quarterfinal, Nakashima and Mérida their first. The Spaniard, who beat Tallon Griekspoor here, is the only one of the eight who isn't a seed.

These quarterfinals still set a record: it's the first time in ATP Tour history that all eight quarterfinalists at a tournament were born in the 2000s. The youngest is Jódar, born in 2006.
