Montreal Without the Big Names: Zverev, Fritz and Medvedev Out

Tallon Griekspoor, ranked No. 69, beat Alexander Zverev 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the National Bank Open. It's the Dutchman's third career win over a top-5 player, and it capped a day that gutted the draw: with Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic already out, no player from the world's top five will reach the last 16 of a Masters 1000 - something that has happened only once before, in Rome in 1991, since the circuit began.

On the same day, Taylor Fritz, the No. 7 seed and fresh off winning Washington, fell to Argentina's Thiago Agustín Tirante 7-5, 6-3, Tirante's third career win over a top-10 player. Daniil Medvedev, the No. 4 seed, lost 6-3, 7-6(5) to Botic van de Zandschulp. Before even taking the court, Félix Auger-Aliassime was already out: the Canadian, the No. 2 seed and hometown favorite, withdrew three or four hours before his opening match with a back injury picked up in practice on Monday. The tournament had already postponed his match by a day to give him time to recover. Lucky loser Jaime Faria took his place.

Today third round brings Musetti a rematch with Rafael Jódar, who came back to beat him six days ago in the Washington quarterfinals (1-6, 6-1, 6-4); they play in the evening on Centre Court, not before 7 p.m. local time. Luciano Darderi faces Shang Juncheng, fresh off his upset of Rublev, while Alex de Minaur, now the highest remaining seed in the draw, takes on Cameron Norrie in the day session.
