WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY:
🇷🇺 Andreeva Wins Her First Slam
Mirra Andreeva beat Maja Chwalinska 6-3 6-2, becoming at 19 the youngest champion in Paris since Monica Seles in 1992. The break in the opening game and then the run to 5-0 in the second set tell the story of a final in which the Russian quickly found her range, while the wind made things difficult for anyone chasing precision. More than the scoreline, what strikes you is the composure with which she handled a day that, given her age and the stage, could have weighed on her very differently. Coached by Conchita Martinez, a finalist here in 2000, Andreeva pushed one step beyond her mentor's best result, and she did it with a calm that hints at a road still long ahead.
🇵🇱 Chwalinska, Where an Unexpected Run Ends
For Maja Chwalinska, ranked 114th and through from qualifying, the final was her tenth match in three weeks, and it closes without the win that would have completed an already remarkable story. Never past the second round of a Slam before Paris, the Pole made her way through the draw with a consistency that will hardly be remembered as a one-off. The feeling is that a run like this gives more than a final defeat takes away, especially for someone who started from so far back. It remains to be seen how much of this Roland Garros she will carry with her in the months ahead.
🇪🇸 Granollers And Zeballos, The Doubles Encore
Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos defended their title by beating the number two seeds Heliovaara and Patten 6-4 6-2, in 77 minutes and without dropping a set all tournament. The Spanish-Argentine pair becomes the fifth team to win the men's doubles in Paris in consecutive years, and the first to do so since 2020. More than the dominance of a single match, what tells the story is the steadiness of a pair that has racked up three of the last five Slams, after last September's US Open. It's the kind of consistency that goes less noticed in doubles but counts for a lot.
WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY:
- Women's doubles (Chatrier, from 11:00) - Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, dominant in the semifinals, take on Aleksandra Krunic and Anna Danilina to open the day on the center court.
- Cobolli vs Zverev (Chatrier, not before 15:00) - Flavio Cobolli plays the first Slam final of his career and becomes the sixth Italian ever to do so, exactly fifty years after Panatta's title in Paris. Across the net is Alexander Zverev, chasing his first Major after three lost finals, who leads the head-to-head 3-1, even though Cobolli's only win came precisely on clay, in Munich this year.
- Worth watching - By reaching the final, Cobolli is already guaranteed a spot in the top ten for the first time: a result that stands, whatever the afternoon brings.
