Rune Returns in the Davis Cup: Eleven Months After the Achilles Rupture

Holger Rune announced his return on Instagram: he will play for Denmark against Bulgaria on 18 and 19 September at the Royal Stage in Hillerød, his first official match in eleven months.

"It's been eleven months of hard work. I can't wait to see the Danish crowd and tennis fans around the world again, I've missed it so much. Playing again, and starting from home, will be beautiful,"

he said in the video.

The last match Rune played was on 18 October 2025, the Stockholm Open semifinal against Ugo Humbert. He was a set up when he retired with a ruptured left Achilles tendon, later operated on. All of 2026 went into rehab: the Dane slipped out of the top hundred and on 31 August he was ranked No. 133, having reached No. 4 on 21 August 2023, the best Danish player ever.

The tie against Bulgaria is worth World Group I: the winner reaches the 2027 Qualifiers, two steps away from the Finals. Matches are best of three sets, two singles on Friday from 16:00 and doubles plus two singles on Saturday from midday. On the other side of the net Bulgaria has called up Grigor Dimitrov as its No. 1, his first Davis Cup selection since 2015.

Rune comes back with no matches in his legs, into a format that gives him up to two in two days in front of a home crowd. The short sets and the Davis Cup, where the point counts for the team and not for the ranking, are probably the least cruel place to find out how the tendon holds.
