🇮🇹 Sinner Cruises Past Shapovalov

Jannik Sinner beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2 in seventy-one minutes, reaching the Indian Wells round of 16 for the fifth consecutive time in as many appearances. Shapovalov committed seven double faults and was broken four times, never truly finding his way into the match after a promising start.

The most interesting thing wasn't so much the victory, but the way Sinner handled a first game in which he was broken to love, only to reset immediately. That ability to not let a negative moment affect him, to proceed as if nothing happened, is probably the trait that most distinguishes him in this phase of the season. In the fourth round he'll face Joao Fonseca, and it will be a different test from everything he's faced so far in the tournament.

🇧🇷 Fonseca Demolishes Tommy Paul And Earns Sinner Clash

Joao Fonseca beat Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-3, reaching a Masters 1000 fourth round for the first time. At nineteen, he is the first Brazilian to go this far at Indian Wells since 2012, when Thomaz Bellucci managed the feat.

The standout stat is his record against top 30 players: 7-1 since last September. "It's going to be a pleasure and hopefully I can get the win," he said about the clash with Sinner. Beyond the enthusiasm, the solidity with which he handled the match against Paul, a player who is always dangerous on these courts, tells the story of a player who is moving beyond being just a promise. The showdown with the world number two will be the most significant test of his young career.

🇮🇹 Paolini Through To The Round Of 16 In Three Sets

Jasmine Paolini beat Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 in two hours and nineteen minutes, reaching the Indian Wells round of 16 for the third consecutive year. The Italian dominated the third set after losing her rhythm in the second.

The match had the typical pattern of days when Paolini has to find counter-measures against a physical opponent who is solid in baseline rallies. The way she closed out the third set, with a 6-1 that brooked no argument, says something about her ability to raise her level at decisive moments. Next up she faces qualifier Talia Gibson.

🇺🇸 Gauff Retires With Arm Problem

Coco Gauff retired during her third round match against Alexandra Eala, at 2-6, 0-2, due to pain in her left arm that forced her to stop after fifty-four minutes. "It was like fireworks were going off inside my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire," the world number four explained.

It's only the second retirement of Gauff's WTA career, after Cincinnati 2022. Doctors believe it's likely a nerve issue, something she had never experienced before. For Eala, the twenty-year-old from the Philippines, advancing to the round of 16 represents the biggest result of her career at Indian Wells, where she will face Linda Noskova.

🇺🇸 Tien Beats Shelton, Zverev And Sabalenka Advance

Learner Tien eliminated Ben Shelton 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, with fifteen aces and an 82% first serve points won percentage. Shelton was hampered by the physical issues that have plagued him since the start of the tournament, trying to shorten rallies with repeated drop shots without ever finding consistency. Tien will face Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round.

Alexander Zverev beat Brandon Nakashima 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-4 in two and a half hours, never dominating but never losing control of the match. Felix Auger-Aliassime won the Canadian derby against Diallo 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3. On the WTA side, Aryna Sabalenka dispatched Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1 in seventy-one minutes, with twenty-three winners: next up she faces Naomi Osaka.

WHAT'S ON TODAY:

Swiatek vs Sakkari - The rematch from the Doha quarterfinal, where Swiatek had come back from 2-5 in the third set before Sakkari closed it out 7-5. Swiatek said she has trained specifically to handle the physical demands. A match worth far more than a third round.
Alcaraz vs Rinderknech (evening session, Stadium 1) - The Spaniard, 13-0 in 2026, faces the 26th seed in a one-sided head-to-head (5-0). But Rinderknech can be dangerous with his serve.
Djokovic vs Kovacevic (opening match, Stadium 1) - Djokovic looks for rhythm after a grueling comeback against Majchrzak. Kovacevic, an American of Serbian descent, isn't the favorite but could make life difficult.
Fritz vs Michelsen - American derby in the third round. Michelsen already beat Fritz in Geneva in 2024, but the context is different and Fritz knows these courts like few others.
Rybakina vs Kostyuk - Rybakina struggled in the previous round against Baptiste. Kostyuk is a technically skilled and unpredictable opponent.
Draper vs Cerundolo - The defending champion seeks the fourth round against the Argentine, who beat Bonzi in a third-set tiebreak. A potential Indian Wells quarterfinal berth is at stake.
Pegula vs Ostapenko - The Latvian has hit 214 winners in WTA 1000 events this season. Pegula will need to be ready for the power surges.
Siniakova vs Andreeva - The Czech, after a three-hour-and-twenty-eight-minute marathon against Fernandez, faces the defending champion.
