WHAT HAPPENED:
🇮🇹 Sinner Beats Borges In Three Sets
Jannik Sinner closed the books on Nuno Borges 7-6(4) 7-6(2) 6-4, never really letting the sense of genuine difficulty show through. Two tie-breaks won by slim margins, though, tell the story of a more even match than the final score suggests. It's the kind of win that counts double at Wimbledon, because it comes on a court that forgives little to anyone who loses focus even for a single game, and Sinner, this early in the tournament, doesn't seem to have any intention of losing focus.
🇷🇸 Djokovic Dispatches Tsitsipas Without A Hitch
Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 6-2, a scoreline that leaves little room for readings other than clear superiority. At his age, every round closed out this cleanly becomes a small clue as to how much fuel is still in the tank, even though it remains risky to draw definitive conclusions at this stage of the tournament. Tsitsipas, never one to give up easily on these courts, almost never found the right answers.
🇷🇺 Andreeva Crashes Out Against Krejcikova
Mirra Andreeva, the fresh Roland Garros champion, was eliminated in the second round, beaten by Barbora Krejcikova 4-6 7-5 6-4, after saving six match points before finally succumbing on the seventh. The Czech, champion here in 2024 but who had slipped to world number 38 amid injuries and struggles, reclaimed the spotlight on a Centre Court that perhaps wasn't expecting it. Matches like this, seemingly over multiple times only to be reopened on the finest of margins, often say more about nerve than about the level of tennis on display, and one wonders how much this episode will weigh on the young Russian's mind in her upcoming appointments.
🇮🇹 Cobolli Closes Out Navone
The match between Flavio Cobolli and Mariano Navone, suspended the previous day for darkness at 1-6 7-6 6-3, was resolved in the Italian's favor in the fourth set, closed out on a 7-6(8) tie-break. A win that came in pieces, across two different days, which nonetheless sends Cobolli through to the next round with more time on court in his legs than he would have liked. Matches broken up and resumed require no small amount of mental adjustment, and not everyone who comes out on top does so in the smoothest way possible.
WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY:
- Berrettini vs Fils (20) - Centre Court, from early afternoon. Berrettini arrives off a four-hour-plus marathon win over Wawrinka, amid applause and hugs at the end of the match: we'll see how much of that energy, and how much fatigue, he brings with him today.
- Swiatek (3) vs Pliskova - Centre Court, opening the day's play. The defending champion returns to the Church Road grass, a surface that has given her more than one satisfaction in recent years.
- Rybakina (2) vs McNally - Centre Court. On grass Rybakina remains one of the most awkward opponents on tour, and whoever faces her knows it well.
- Zverev vs Royer - Court 1. The German looks for consistency after a season start marked by ups and downs.
- Paolini (13) vs Golubic - Court 2. The Italian, fresh off a tricky comeback in the previous round, tries to find greater fluency in her tennis.
- Anisimova (6) vs Kenin - Court 2. An all-American clash, with Kenin who has never hidden her desire to return to the big stages.
