Zverev Skips Stuttgart: Only Halle Before Wimbledon

Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the BOSS Open in Stuttgart, the grass-court ATP 250 that opens the German season from June 8 to 14, just one day after capturing his first Slam at Roland Garros. The German, coming off Sunday's marathon against Flavio Cobolli, has chosen not to step straight back onto the court on home soil.

The withdrawal comes as no surprise. The Paris final, won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 in four hours and sixteen minutes, took its toll: once the match passed the three-hour mark, Zverev began shaking out his legs from exhaustion and visibly battled fatigue before closing out the fifth set comfortably. Switching from clay to grass in just two days, with that kind of mileage in his legs, would have been a risk that was hard to justify.

With the Stuttgart withdrawal, Zverev's grass-court schedule shrinks to a single tournament before the Championships: the Halle Open, scheduled from June 15 to 21. Wimbledon will then begin on June 29, leaving the newly crowned Slam champion very little time to rediscover his feel on the fastest surface.

It is a decision that speaks to Zverev's new status. After chasing his first Major for years through three lost finals, the German can finally manage his calendar like a champion, pacing his energy instead of running after every available point. The question now is what physical shape he will be in when he arrives in Halle, the only true grass-court dress rehearsal of a summer that now carries an entirely different weight.
