Cobolli in Paris: the path to sealing the Finals

Flavio Cobolli is the No. 5 seed at the Paris Masters 1000 (November 2-8) and, thanks to a bye, starts in the second round. His quarter of the draw is the one most loaded with recent form. It includes Rafael Jódar, a finalist in Shanghai, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who beat him in that final, and Daniil Medvedev, who defended his Almaty title last Sunday. On a slow court, Cobolli's path depends less on his opponents than on his left thigh.
The slow court and the left thigh
In 2025, its first year at the La Défense Arena, the Paris court recorded a Court Pace Index of 35.1 according to Tennis TV data, much slower than Bercy in 2024. The 2026 figure has not been published yet. If the surface stays the same, rallies get longer and the serve counts for less.
On paper it is the right court for Cobolli. Indoors he builds with the deep return, defense well behind the baseline and one more ball in the neutral rally. All three demand legs.
On Thursday in Vienna he retired at 2-5 in the first set against Matteo Berrettini, with his left thigh already strapped before the match. Scans showed "a small muscle strain," and Cobolli announced he would leave for Paris on Saturday to do everything possible to play.
There is also the Race to consider. Cobolli is sixth and, with Jannik Sinner out injured, the top nine go to Turin. Every round he wins brings him closer to qualifying, but every long rally weighs on a leg that has to hold up at the Finals in two weeks.
Second round and last 16: the leg test, then Jódar
In his opener he faces Jan-Lennard Struff or Frenchman Arthur Géa. It is the round where the opponent's name matters less than the movement. A first set with long rallies will show whether Cobolli can defend at full stretch without losing ground.
In the last 16 the favorite in the section is Jódar, the No. 9 seed. In Shanghai he beat Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals and lost the final from a set up to Davidovich Fokina, 6-1, 6-7, 4-6. In the first round he meets Alejandro Tabilo again, whom he beat 6-4, 6-2 a few days ago in Basel.
He and Cobolli have already played the Cincinnati round of 16 in August, won by the Italian 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. According to Punto de Break's analysis, in the third set Jódar landed 31% of his shots in the service-box zone, eight points above his average. Cobolli's attack rate rose from 20% in the first set to 31%. The Spaniard finished with 48 unforced errors.
The plan is still the Cincinnati one: return deep, deny Jódar the time to load up his forehand, attack the first short ball. That day, though, according to Punto de Break, Jódar arrived drained after a run of closely spaced matches. In Paris the fatigue is more evenly spread: he has Shanghai and Basel in his legs, Cobolli the muscle problem.
The quarterfinal: Medvedev
In the quarterfinals the most likely opponent is Medvedev, who in the second round meets the winner between Ignacio Buse and Zizou Bergs, the Belgian who knocked out Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai. In the last 16 the Russian should face Davidovich Fokina, the No. 13 seed, who opens against wild card Moïse Kouamé and then meets the winner between Denis Shapovalov and Karen Khachanov.
Against Medvedev, hard courts have delivered a clear verdict. In 2024 Cobolli lost to him at the US Open and in Beijing without winning a set. He beat him in April in Madrid, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, but on clay.
A slow indoor court helps Medvedev. He returns from deep, gets almost everything back and forces his opponent to win the same point three or four times. Against him, lengthening the rally is not enough. Cobolli has to pick his moment to accelerate with the forehand and take the net, exactly the changes of pace that a sore thigh makes harder.
In the semifinal the bottom section offers Alcaraz, who beat him at Roland Garros 2023, Arthur Fils or Taylor Fritz. Cobolli is a clear favorite in his opener if the leg holds up, starts as a slight underdog against Jódar and an underdog against Medvedev. The title remains out of reach: it would take five straight indoor wins with a thigh to manage. The prediction falls apart if in the second round Cobolli wins the long rallies without trying to shorten them. With the leg sound, the last-16 match with Jódar goes back to being the Cincinnati one, and the quarterfinal with Medvedev becomes an open match.
