🇩🇪 Zverev Finds His First Major

Alexander Zverev beat Flavio Cobolli 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-7(5) 6-1 in four hours and sixteen minutes, claiming his first Slam title after three lost finals. The German becomes the first of his countrymen to lift the Musketeers' Cup since Henner Henkel in 1937, and the first to win a Major since Boris Becker. More than the score, what a final like this leaves behind is the way Zverev held firm in the moments when it seemed everything might slip away from him again, after losing the fourth-set tie-break and watching the momentum drift to the other side. It's the kind of win that, given how he got here, seems to carry as much weight as the trophy itself, if not more.

🇮🇹 Cobolli, A Defeat That Leaves a Lot Behind

For Flavio Cobolli, his first Slam final ended in the fifth set, also undone by a calf cramp that affected the closing stretch ("the calf was gone," he said afterward). The Italian leaves Paris climbing to number 10 in the rankings, the top ten for the first time in his career, exactly fifty years after Panatta's title — Panatta himself handed over the trophy on Chatrier. His words to Zverev, "if they ask me who deserves this title more, I always say you," capture the tone of a day lived with composure. The feeling is that a run like this leaves more than a lost final takes away, especially looking at the goals Cobolli had set for the season.

🇨🇿 Siniakova And Townsend, The Final Women's Act

Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, the number one seeds, wrapped up the women's doubles draw by beating Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic 6-2 7-5 in one hour and thirty-two minutes. For Siniakova it's a fourth Roland Garros and an eleventh Slam in her career, for Townsend a first title in Paris and a third Major. More than the single match, in which they had to recover from a deficit in the second set, what stands out is the consistency of a pairing moving at a pace the rest of the field struggles to match this season. It's the kind of steadiness that is less noticeable in doubles, but that always ends up mattering by the end of a tournament.

WHAT HAPPENS TODAY:

The grass season opens - With Paris behind us, the tour switches surface from today: in Stuttgart (ATP 250) the seeding is led by Shelton, the top seed, and Fritz, the defending champion.
Libéma Open, 's-Hertogenbosch - On the quick switch from clay to grass, de Minaur, Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime are among the men, while in the women's draw the names to watch are Mertens, the defending champion, Navarro and Krejcikova.
Worth watching - The first days on grass say little that's definitive, but they often reveal who has quickly shaken off the fatigue of Roland Garros and who, instead, will need time to find their range again.
